The organization operates in Tanzania mainland. Currently, it is operating in Muleba district Kagera region with the expectations of reaching three more districts at the end of 2016. The organization has worked with four divisions of Muleba district including Kimwani, Muleba, Nshamba and Kamachumu. Four projects have been implemented in these areas where 15 groups and 450 individuals have been reached.
Ongoing Projects
ACED
is currently supporting 3 projects in Muleba District.
1. Beekeeping project
ACED is working with
five beekeeping groups from different wards of Muleba district. These groups
include ABEMAHAMO group, UMOJA WA WAZEE KAKINDO group and UMOJA NI NGUVU group from Burungura
ward, UHIMANYU group from Mbunda
ward, REDES group from Kimwani ward
and UPENDO group from Rutenge
–Kamachumu. The groups are implementing beekeeping projects under the support
and supervision of ACED. They have a total of 673 beehives, 423 being
traditional and 250 Modern beehives.
The project has been
implemented as part of ACED’s strategies in conserving the environment by
involving and working with local
communities especially the rural poor whose life mostly depend on the Forestry
resources. ACED has been assisting the
groups by providing trainings to equip them with beekeeping skills and
knowledge, Trainings on environmental related matters, Entrepreneurial studies,
Organizing market for their bee products like honey, bee wax and propolis etc,
Preparing packaging equipments for their bee products and assisting the groups
during harvesting period in order to ensure good quality of bee products. The
Six groups are expecting to harvest 2000
Kg of honey and 1200 Kg of bee
wax from 200 modern and 350 traditional beehives with colonies
at the end September 2014.
Beekeeping
activities are important measures to environmental degradation and also are
environmental friend economic activity providing alternative source of income
to rural families contrary to charcoal making and lumbering activities. It
provides a sustainable alternative form of income generation to more damaging
activities and encouraging conservation of forest resources. Income generated
from the sales of honey, beeswax and other bee products help to improve the
standards of living to the adjacent communities while on the other hand proving
them with alternative economic activity.
2. Efficient Cook Stoves project
ACED has started implementing the Efficient Cook Stoves project to some of
the families in Muleba District. 20
stoves have been built in Muleba ward in the period between January and June
2014, while other 20 stoves are
expected to be built in Bureza ward at the end of year 2014. This will make a total of 40 households having benefited from the
project. The project has been implemented to achieve the conservation aspect of
the Organization’s objectives as the stove
reduces wood demand and pressure on
forests & slowing deforestation,
cooks food more quickly, Saves money for families by reducing fuel
needs, Improves users’ health by
reducing exposure to hazardous air pollutants
and finally the stove requires less fuel and is less smoky.
3. Tree nursery project
In the implementation of the project,
ACED is supporting both individuals and groups engaging themselves in tree
nursery activities. 30 individuals
and 10 groups have been supported
since January to date. They have received technical support on nursery
management, tree planting and other silvicultural operations like pruning,
thinning and fertilizer application. The project has been implemented as to
equip people with relevant knowledge and skills on tree nursery management and
emphasizing the participation of the community in tree planting programs. This
will help to reduce the consequences of forest degradation, soil
and water degradation, low agricultural productivity, wood fuel shortage and
flooding in the near future. The activity will also
help to improve the states of forests and provide excellent
resources for bees and beekeeping, as bees are a vital part of forest
ecosystems. Indigenous bee species are natural forest resources, and beekeeping
enables their exploitation by humans for valuable products like honey, beeswax
and propolis.
